Websites & Search Engine Optimisation
In today’s world, websites are the ‘shop fronts’ for dog professionals; more often than not, they’re the first point of contact that a client has with your business. Just like a traditional shop, if your website isn’t inviting your client may walk right on by to a competitor. If your client does decide to ‘come in’ and they can’t find what they want due to poor navigation, or page load times, they will go onto the next site.
“The average human attention span has declined from 12 seconds in the year 2000 to 8 seconds now. This is much shorter than the attention span of a goldfish (at 9 seconds). This was revealed by a recent study by Microsoft Corp. that surveyed 2,000 people and monitored brain activity of 112 others using electroencephalograms (EEGs) – Internet Stats & Facts 2016.
With these challenges, the framework and foundations you choose for your website – your content management system (CMS) – are all important. A straightforward, ‘thumb-friendly’ and mobile responsive website needn’t cost the earth, and you don’t have to be a computer programmer or web-designer to have a great website!
I’ve worked with lots of different content management systems over the last two decades, and have created and managed websites of all sizes. I firmly believe that creating a wonderful website (no matter what your budget) is within everyone’s reach. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is a phrase that may fill you with dread, or ideas of an expensive SEO specialist. However, it’s not something you can afford to put off. Put simply, it’s a vital part of your website and online marketing that helps search engines match your website to your clients’ search terms, resulting in being listed in the search engine results page (SERP).
I’ve lost count of the number of emails I receive for Happy Hounds Dog Training, trying to sell me expensive SEO services and promising me that the sender (or their company) can get me on page one of Google. Most of them haven’t bothered to do their homework; for the search terms that my clients use, Happy Hounds is on the first page of Google!
SEO can seem a bit like The Dark Arts (if you’ll excuse the Harry Potter reference). All those abbreviations (CTR, CPC, PPC, GA, SEO, SERP, SEM), talk of algorithms, domain authority, page authority, metadata, and other technical terms may seem mystifying but you can implement the basics of good SEO yourself, without having to spend a fortune or having in-depth technical knowledge.
It is possible to achieve listings on the first page of major search engines by doing it yourself and undertaking your own SEO. I can help understand the basics of SEO and how to implement it yourself, including:
- How to conduct online market research
- How to research what keywords and phrases your clients search for
- The importance of your website structure
- Organic versus paid for search
- Brand building
- Link building
